SBB has exercised a contract option for 33 additional FLIRT multiple units. This order is part of a framework agreement signed in 2022 between SBB, Thurbo, and RegionAlps, which allows for the development and delivery of up to 510 single-deck FLIRT trains. Following the signing of the framework agreement, Stadler was initially tasked with producing 286 FLIRT trains in 2022. Nearly a year and a half later, Stadler unveiled the new FLIRT Evo to the public.
Since the introduction of direct connections between Switzerland and France in 1997, Stadler is now collaborating with SBB to enhance cross-border regional transport to meet the demands of an international economic area. The new vehicles will operate across borders, providing faster direct connections between northwestern Switzerland and Alsace. These new multiple units will be certified for use in both Switzerland and France, offering passengers quicker and more direct travel every 30 minutes starting at the end of 2030.

Multiple Units with Special Features
These vehicles are equipped with dual integrated traction power and train protection systems, enabling operation in both Switzerland and France. Additionally, up to three FLIRT Evo units can be coupled together for operation in France. In Switzerland, mixed traction with other FLIRT Evo units allows up to four-fold traction. This flexibility enhances the fleet’s economic efficiency.
The FLIRT trains have been optimized to improve overall capacity, providing more space for bicycles, strollers, and large luggage items. They are designed to accommodate passengers with reduced mobility, featuring two dedicated wheelchair spaces and a wheelchair-accessible toilet on each train. Each vehicle has a seating capacity of 146, which doubles to 292 seats when two units are coupled together.
