A Qatar Airways flight from Doha made an urgent emergency landing in Dublin, injuring 12 passengers amid severe turbulence.
Dublin Airport reported that approximately 12 individuals sustained injuries on a Qatar Airways flight arriving from Doha. The injuries were a result of turbulence encountered during the flight, but the aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, managed to land safely on schedule.
The flight, identified as QR017, touched down just before 1 p.m. local time in Dublin.
“Emergency services, including Airport Police and the Fire and Rescue department, were ready on the ground as the plane landed. This response followed reports from six passengers and six crew members, totaling 12, who suffered injuries due to the turbulence experienced over Turkey,” airport officials explained.
This turbulence incident follows closely on the heels of another serious event involving a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore, which was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok just five days earlier. That episode of severe turbulence resulted in the death of a 73-year-old British passenger and critical injuries to 20 other individuals.
A study from the US National Transportation Safety Board in 2021 highlighted that turbulence is the leading cause of airline accidents, accounting for more than one-third of all reported incidents from 2009 to 2018. While these turbulence events frequently resulted in serious injuries, they rarely caused any structural damage to the aircraft involved.
