The Oakland Board of Port Commissioners unanimously voted to grant final approval for renaming the airport from “Metropolitan Oakland International Airport” to “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.” The Port hopes that this new name will enhance awareness among travelers about the airport’s location on the San Francisco Bay, ultimately leading to increased nonstop destination options.

“Our Board came to these discussions with a shared love of Oakland and a desire to see our city and airport thrive,” said Port Commission President Barbara Leslie. “Since our initial vote, the Port has met with dozens of community leaders and stakeholders and heard their concerns. We are moving forward with a commitment to honoring our past while building a stronger, more inclusive future.”

Despite being situated on San Francisco Bay for nearly a century since 1927, a significant number of travelers remain oblivious to OAK’s close proximity to a plethora of attractions in the region. These include the prestigious universities of the San Francisco Bay Area, renowned wine country, three national laboratories, and neighboring cities like San Francisco and Berkeley. By integrating the airport’s location on the “San Francisco Bay” into its official name, we can boost awareness among visitors regarding its geographical positioning while preserving the airport’s established brand.

“The convenience and ease of traveling through OAK won’t change with our name,” said Interim Director of Aviation Craig Simon. “OAK is the closest major airport to 58 percent of the Bay Area population. The combined population of the counties closest to OAK is 4.1 million compared with 1.5 million in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. This designation will let the world know who we serve.”

The rebranding holds significance in the Port’s overarching endeavor to fortify and expand the airport as a vital economic driver for Oakland. The airport sustains 30,000 well-compensated jobs within Oakland and the wider San Francisco Bay Area. Additionally, the Port is enhancing the overall passenger journey with terminal enhancements and introducing fresh local concessions and dining choices.
