MTR Corporation, a leader in low-carbon transportation solutions, is dedicated to slashing carbon emissions via a variety of initiatives. On June 8, 2024, the company marked a significant milestone by launching its inaugural electric bus on MTR Bus Route K54. This route connects Wo Tin Estate, Siu Hong Station, and Tuen Mun Town Centre, offering an eco-friendly transit option within the community.
Funded by the New Energy Transport Fund from the Environment and Ecological Bureau, MTR’s first electric bus and its associated charging infrastructure represent a major leap towards sustainable transport. This electric model cuts carbon emissions by over 60% and operates more quietly than traditional diesel buses, enhancing passenger comfort with its meticulously designed interiors and ample seating (refer to appendix). The bus features an energy regenerative braking system that captures kinetic energy during braking, converting it into electrical energy to power onboard systems and improve battery efficiency. Additionally, its electric motor minimizes energy wastage during idling, making it ideal for feeder routes with frequent stops for passenger boarding and alighting.
“As a low-carbon transport provider, MTR Corporation has been actively reducing its carbon footprint and implementing various eco-friendly measures. With the introduction of the first electric bus, residents of the Northwest New Territories will be able to enjoy more comfortable and environmentally-friendly feeder bus services,” said Ms Jeny Yeung, Managing Director – Hong Kong Transport Services of MTR Corporation.
Serving the Northwest New Territories, MTR’s feeder bus network transports over 160,000 passengers daily. With the introduction of this electric bus, the corporation plans to progressively phase out diesel buses, aiming to deploy at least 30 electric buses and augment charging facilities by the end of 2026.
With 45 years of comprehensive experience in railway project management—from design and construction to commissioning, maintenance, and operations—MTR continues to push the boundaries of integrated transport solutions beyond conventional rail services.
