Alstom, a leading provider of smart and sustainable mobility solutions, has delivered the railway signaling systems for the newly inaugurated extension of Metro do Porto’s Yellow Line in Oporto. The extension is equipped with the same advanced signaling system already in use across the network, featuring a state-of-the-art interlocking system for real-time vehicle monitoring. The engineering, installation, and commissioning of this system were managed at Alstom’s facilities in Maia, Porto.
The Yellow Line extension stretches from Santo Ovídio to Vila d’Este in southern Oporto, adding three new stations, including one underground. This 3.1 km route features a 500-meter viaduct and a one-kilometer tunnel.

Metro do Porto, Oporto’s light rail system, spans approximately 78 km with six lines, serving around 70 million passengers annually. Alstom has provided 102 trains and Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems for both tracks and onboard units across the entire network.

In Portugal, Alstom has had a presence for more than three decades. Currently, two out of every three trains in the country are manufactured by Alstom or incorporate Alstom technology, including high-speed, regional, metro, and electric trains. Alstom’s ATP system manages over 1,500 km of the Portuguese rail network and more than 500 onboard units. For urban mobility, Alstom supplied the signaling system for Metro do Porto and manufactured the first 102 trains currently operating on this network. Additionally, Alstom provides the ATP system for the 18 new trains recently acquired by Metro do Porto.
