The Massara Shipyard in Cairo, Egypt, has recently launched Viking’s newest luxury river cruise ship, the Viking Sobek, which is scheduled to begin operations in late 2024. The shipyard celebrated this significant construction milestone with a traditional float out ceremony on May 14. Following the ceremony, the Viking Sobek was transferred to a nearby outfitting dock where it will undergo the final stages of construction.

Design and Features of Viking Sobek

Viking Sobek is designed as an identical sister ship to the Viking Osiris, Viking Aton, and Viking Hathor, which is set to debut this summer. It boasts several design elements that are already familiar to Viking guests:

  • A square bow designed for optimal navigation and stability.
  • An indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace, allowing guests to enjoy the surrounding scenic views in comfort.

By the end of 2024, Viking plans to have six ships, including Viking Sobek, cruising the Nile, enhancing their offerings in this historic region.

Exclusive ‘Pharaohs & Pyramids’ Itinerary

The Viking Sobek will operate Viking’s 12-day ‘Pharaohs & Pyramids’ itinerary, crafted to provide guests with a comprehensive exploration of Egypt’s rich historical tapestry. This journey includes:

  • A three-night hotel stay in Cairo, during which guests can visit major landmarks such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the necropolis of Sakkara, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
  • After the stay in Cairo, guests will fly to Luxor to explore the majestic Temples of Luxor and Karnak.
  • The voyage continues with an eight-day roundtrip cruise along the Nile River, offering up-close experiences of Egypt’s ancient wonders.
  • The itinerary concludes with a flight back to Cairo for one final night, offering guests a chance to reflect on their journey.

Comments from Viking’s Leadership

Torstein Hagen, the chairman and CEO of Viking, expressed his enthusiasm for the new addition to their fleet, stating that Egypt has always been a magnet for travelers intrigued by its culture and history. He emphasized that Viking Sobek and its sister ships represent the pinnacle of elegance on the Nile and reaffirmed Viking’s commitment to providing exceptional travel experiences in this fascinating region.

With the upcoming launch of Viking Sobek, Viking Cruises continues to expand its luxurious and culturally immersive travel offerings along the Nile. This new vessel not only promises enhanced comfort and style but also facilitates deeper engagement with Egypt’s ancient landmarks, ensuring that guests have a memorable and enriching travel experience.
