Amtrak 2023 Sustainability Report highlights significant environmental progress, showcasing efforts to reduce GHG emissions.

WASHINGTON – The latest Sustainability Report for fiscal year 2023 reveals Amtrak’s strides towards achieving Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. Throughout FY23, Amtrak substituted over a million gallons of traditional fossil fuels with renewable diesel, incorporated climate resilience and sustainability features in its capital projects, and completed designs for its inaugural clean energy production site.

“Passenger rail is widely recognized as one of the most sustainable modes of transportation, and we are taking steps to make rail even more attractive,” said Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner. “The emissions reductions already met, and climate goals set forth in the annual report underline our commitment to providing customers safe and reliable travel while further reducing our already-low carbon footprint.”

Key points from Amtrak’s FY23 Sustainability Report reveal significant strides in environmental initiatives:

  • Over 1.2 million gallons of fossil fuels were replaced with renewable diesel across the Capitol Corridor, Pacific Surfliner, and Amtrak San Joaquins services in California, cutting GHG emissions by approximately 63%.
  • The Metropolitan Lounge in Moynihan Train Hall has ceased the use of disposable tableware, shifting from prepackaged items to in-house meal preparation, which slashed its plastic usage by 75%.
  • Introduction of the first electric bus into the National Network of Thruway service on the Pacific Northwest’s Cascades route, lowering GHG emissions by 109 metric tons annually.
  • Implementation of resilient design standards for both new projects and ongoing maintenance, preparing Amtrak for future climate variability.

With an ambitious goal to double its ridership to 66 million by 2040, Amtrak is actively working to attract more travelers away from cars and planes through its Climate Commitment strategies. These efforts are aimed at enhancing sustainability and bolstering resilience, positioning Amtrak as a vital player in combating climate change. Further insights into the business and investment strategies to achieve these objectives can be found in Amtrak’s FY 2023 Sustainability Report.
