Alstom, a foremost authority in intelligent and green transportation, has successfully launched the upgraded signalling system on the Beni Suef Assuyt (BSA) railway line, spanning 15 stations from Beni Suef to Assyut, which is now operational for public use.

Under its agreement to develop the 250-kilometer BSA route, Alstom handled all elements of the design, installation, testing, and commissioning processes. The upgrade incorporates a cutting-edge SIL 4 electronic interlocking signalling system called the IXL SmartLock 400 GP solution, ensuring utmost safety and dependability. The system is further supported by robust SCADA technology and a support framework that guarantees consistently high operational performance and availability. Features such as Alstom’s renowned Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) system, the TLC system, and a 11kV power supply substation enhance the management of the network, providing comprehensive, user-friendly controls.

The introduction of Alstom’s sophisticated signalling solution enables trains on this route to achieve speeds up to 160 km/h, servicing 250 km with 15 stops and the capacity to transport 60,000 passengers daily. This round-the-clock service plays a crucial role in the daily commute for many in Egypt.

“We take great pride in achieving this significant milestone for a project of such importance to equip Egypt’s railway network with state-of-the-art technology solutions. Our aim is to enhance the safety and efficiency of line operations while improving the passengers’ travel experience. This accomplishment marks a major milestone in our continued efforts to deliver world-class mobility solutions that meet and exceed our customers’ expectations, “said Ramy Salah, Egypt Managing Director at Alstom.

Having a presence in Egypt for over 40 years, Alstom has played a pivotal role in the ongoing expansion of the nation’s railway infrastructure. Alstom Egypt has cultivated a local workforce, currently leading a centre of excellence in signalling, power supply, and depot equipment. This centre supports projects across the AMECA region and is a testament to Alstom Egypt’s significant contribution to the advancement of the Egyptian rail industry.
