NAV CANADA and Victoria Airport Authority celebrate groundbreaking for innovative Victoria Airport Control Tower, signaling a new era in air traffic management.

NAV CANADA and the Victoria Airport Authority marked a significant milestone today as they ceremonially commenced the construction of the cutting-edge Victoria Airport Control Tower.

The groundbreaking event unfolded at the designated construction site adjacent to the Airside Operations Centre. Dignitaries from NAV CANADA, the Airport Authority, alongside municipal officials and industry leaders, gathered to commemorate this momentous occasion. This event comes on the heels of the announcement made in autumn 2022 regarding the forthcoming construction of the innovative Tower.

NAV CANADA is consistently working to update its essential infrastructure. The new tower will enhance service delivery with improved control tower sight lines over the airfield,” says Raymond Bohn, President and CEO, NAV CANADA. “Additionally, to support our net-zero goals by 2050, we are adopting comprehensive strategies to ensure the sustainability of our new facilities”.

In a groundbreaking partnership with the Victoria Airport Authority, NAV CANADA proudly unveils its inaugural LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified Tower. This eco-conscious structure is set to revolutionize air traffic control with its commitment to sustainability, boasting green power sourced from BC Hydro to ensure zero greenhouse gas emissions during regular operations, complemented by an emergency power generator.

But NAV CANADA’s dedication to environmental stewardship extends beyond the building itself. Embracing a holistic approach, the organization is pioneering the restoration of the Garry Oak Meadow, an endangered ecosystem in Canada. Collaborating with indigenous bushes, natural grasses, and wildflowers, the tower’s landscaping not only enhances biodiversity but also honors the region’s rich ecological heritage. Moreover, to mitigate potential hazards to aviation safety, only non-fruit-bearing plants have been selected, minimizing the attraction of birds.

Furthermore, NAV CANADA is spearheading innovative solutions to manage stormwater runoff. By incorporating permeable pavers in the parking area, the control tower site facilitates groundwater recharge and reduces the risk of flooding. This multifaceted approach underscores NAV CANADA’s unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility and sets a new standard for sustainable infrastructure in the aviation industry.

Commencing its construction journey in the spring of 2024, the new Victoria Tower is slated for completion by 2027. This architectural marvel will stand tall at a height of 27.7 meters, encompassing a total gross floor area spanning 791.4 square meters. Anticipation builds as this beacon of innovation and functionality takes shape, destined to redefine the skyline and serve as a testament to progress in the years to come.
