The Hobart City Council has endorsed the Hobart Transport Strategy 2024, a comprehensive plan designed to foster an integrated, climate-ready, and efficient transport and land use system. This initiative aims to offer diverse transport options, reduce congestion, and enhance the city’s liveability.
Acting Hobart Lord Mayor Dr. Zelinda Sherlock highlighted the significance of this strategy. “Our vision is to create a city where everyone has effective, safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly ways to move and connect,” she said. “The Hobart Transport Strategy 2024 is a bold step towards making this vision a reality, ensuring that our transport network meets the needs of all Hobartians.”
The strategy includes 71 actions across various themes and focus areas, with plans to collaborate with key stakeholders for implementation. RACT General Manager Advocacy & Government Relations Melinda Percival expressed support for the strategy, emphasizing the need for a well-planned transport network to support the city’s sustainable growth. “We’re supportive of initiatives that promote alternative modes of transport, enabling people to access and live around our capital efficiently,” Percival noted.
Cr Ryan Posselt, City Mobility Portfolio Chair, discussed the strategy’s focus on flexible and inclusive transport options. “Transport choice means that when we need to get from A to B, we have a variety of options that are safe, efficient, and comfortable,” he said. The strategy not only aims to improve existing transport infrastructure but also encourages a shift towards more sustainable and healthier travel choices.
The core values of the Hobart Transport Strategy 2024 include encouraging behavior change, preparing for climate-ready transport, ensuring safe and healthy streets, and leveraging emerging trends to enhance the city. Dr. Sherlock highlighted the benefits of changing travel behaviors, such as reducing congestion, lowering emissions, and promoting healthier lifestyles.
The City of Hobart will lead by example, refreshing its workplace travel plan and improving communication about transport options. Additionally, the city will empower the community by publishing journey-to-work data and supporting data-informed decision-making for transport improvements.
By addressing current transport challenges and promoting sustainable options, the Hobart Transport Strategy 2024 aims to enhance the city’s liveability and productivity, ensuring a vibrant and connected community.
