The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) recently announced an expansion of the check-in service provided at New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium metro stations on the Airport Express Line. Initially launched in the first week of June, this service was designed to streamline travel procedures for passengers flying internationally via Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Collaboration for Enhanced Passenger Experience

In a move to enhance passenger convenience, DMRC, in collaboration with Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), Air India, and Vistara Airlines, has broadened the scope of its ‘Check-in & Baggage-Drop’ service. Previously exclusive to domestic travelers, this facility is now extended to international passengers traveling with Air India and Vistara Airlines. Anuj Dayal, the Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications at DMRC, emphasized the aim of the initiative to simplify check-in processes for international flyers at these pivotal metro stations in Delhi.

Impact on the Travel Industry

This development is poised to significantly influence the travel industry by:

  • Reducing Congestion at Airports: By allowing passengers to check in and drop off their baggage at metro stations, the initiative is expected to decrease congestion at airport check-in counters.
  • Enhancing Passenger Convenience: Providing a check-in option outside the airport makes travel more convenient and could lead to increased passenger satisfaction.
  • Encouraging Public Transport Use: This service may encourage more travelers to use the metro, thereby reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact.

Benefits to Travelers

Travelers stand to gain several benefits from this enhanced service:

  • Time Efficiency: Passengers can save time by avoiding long queues at the airport.
  • Travel Flexibility: With the ability to check in at the metro station, travelers have more flexibility in managing their time before their flights.
  • Reduced Stress: The convenience of this service can reduce travel-related stress, providing a more relaxed journey to the airport.

Future Prospects and Invitations

The success of this service has been noted by DMRC, with Dayal reporting encouraging participation from passengers. Looking forward, DMRC is keen on inviting more airlines to establish similar facilities, aiming to broaden the benefits for a larger number of travelers.
